Permanent Exhibits in Town Hall

The Jamestown Historical Society has two permanent exhibits in Town Hall.

Land Agreement Document

The original prepurchase agreement among the potential buyers of Conanicut Island as they prepared for a "full and firm purchase" of the island from the Narragansetts is displayed in a specially designed, sealed case in the first floor hallway. The exhibit includes a transcription of the document with modern spelling and background information about the document and the signers.

 Jamestown in the Resort Era

A new permanent exhibit in the back stairwell of the Town Hall celebrates the history of Jamestown in the Resort Era. From the mid-1870s until the late 1920s, Jamestown prospered as a summer resort.  Industrialists and professionals from St. Louis and Philadelphia, as well as many military personnel, visited the island annually and established summer homes here.
